Photos of trip

Here are various photos from the trip. Most of the dilapidated buildings are from Detroit.  Most of the colonial looking buildings are in Philadelphia.  Party photo with a group of girls is at Dutchman's Restaurant in Jersey Shore.  Cleveland Rock Hall of Fame had a Rolling Stones Exhibit.  Nice panoramic photos of Lake Erie Shore and an urban farm in Detroit.

There's a photo of a black squirrel in Detroit.  A photo of me giggling next to a funny real estate sign in Philly.  A photo of the gate of the old tigers stadium in downtown Detroit.

A photo of the boardwalk in seaside heights in the jersey shore.  A photo of the Long Beach campground sign just outside of Long Beach Island.

New Jersey day two, New York City/State, Cleveland, back home,

**I stopped posting during this part of the trip, most likely because I didn't check into hotels until extremely late and just wanted to sleep. This is posted as an after-the-fact post to sum up the remainder of the trip

Saturday was a fun day on the Jersey Shore. I packed up my things from the campsite and went on my way. I pulled into Long Beach Island with the intention of doing some crabbing. One of the places said they had some crab traps along with some crab lines I could use.  I didn't end up doing that. I wandered around and found a craft fair and bought some nice pieces of hand-crafted jewelry for my nieces and nephew.  I also bought something for Delores, the building supervisor/contact person.  And one small thing for my mom.

Then I had lunch near Viking Village.  It was a Greek-owned place.  They served a lot of fried seafood options, called "Off the Hook".  I had a grilled seafood sausage, made with 100% shellfish.  It was tasty. I drove around and looked at the area.  There were plenty of places to shop--I stopped in Viking Village, which had some shops.  I grabbed ice cream.  I saw the big fishing ships that go out about 50 miles from shore and fish for whatever they fish for off the Jersey Shore.  Then I went and did parasailing, which is not worth the 75 dollars. It's a bit uneventful.  They put you about 350 ft high on a parachute.  The view is great and it's peaceful.  I saw the entire shoreline of Long Beach Island.  I would recommend other options, like a kayak tour of the state park, where a woman told me her kids saw dolphins swimming and glimpses of other wildlife.

Then I stopped at a bar/restaurant which somebody recommended to me.  There was a woman talking about how tourism had taken a hit this year, possibly because of Hurricane Sandy of last October.  She sounded like she was struggling.  Most of the infrastructure seemed to be in place still, but I did see a lot of damage, especially north of Seaside Heights where I guess the ocean broke through.  Apparently a lot of people on the mainland near the bay also got flooded when the ocean water got into the bay and caused it to swell over.

I drove the length of the island looking for a place to eat or that had wi-fi to research where to stay for the night.  Finally, I stopped at a cafe that had wifi.  The manager was talking about his brother who sounded a bit messed up.  Apparently he was at Bonaroo and was licking girls' backs and twitching and such.  Sounds like drugs could still have a grip on America's youth.

I decided to have dinner at this German restaurant.  I met some friendly people who advised me to head to Sea Shell Hotel for a more lively atmosphere.  There was a live band and plenty to do.  It was a fun night.  I had to check 10 hotels before finding a vacancy.  Saturday nights in the Jersey Shore is difficult to find a room.

The next day I was a bit tired from a late night, or rather 3 consecutive late nights(maybe more, wasn't counting at that point).  I parked it a McDonald's and decided to go to NYC as the next destination.  Before that I stopped and ate a sandwich and did some laundry at a laundromat.  I set my GPS for Astoria, submitted a request to stay at an airbnb spot in Queens and drove into the great city of New York.  There was heaps of traffic, it was late, I was tired. Finally, I stopped in Astoria, walked around, grabbed a pork souvlaki sandwich, headed to a motel near JFK, slept there for the night.

The next day was an early Monday morning. I felt like a commuter going to work.  I had a case of the Mondays without question.  I met my friend Roberta at our rendevous just as a fight was breaking out. She was just about to email me from an internet station there since I was 45 min late.  Finally, I showed up and we headed to the Museum of Natural History.  What a great museum to finally see.  World famous exhibits. We had lunch at a Salumeria, which served small plates, mostly cold cuts(prosciutto, salami, etc).  We had some brown rice w/vegetable dish similar to risotto and pork ribs in a light tomato sauce.  Not very filling but tasty.

Next was strolling around East Village.  We arrived by train, stopped and got a map.  visited some famous sites of famous people's former apts or bars or studios.  CBGB is now a John Varvatos on Bowery.   We stopped and ate some Mexican food.  Then walked into Soho and the shopping began.  She bought a nice cheap dress at OMG,and I bought a shirt and skinny jeans from H&M.  Earlier I had bought some sunglasses, which have turned out to be low-quality and not worth the money.

Sat at Starbucks waiting for my charger to charge and confirmed my stay at my friend John's in Queens for the night.   Parted ways and agreed that I would drive her back to Chicago the next day.

The next 2 days were fun.  We hit the road and ended up staying just past Ithaca, NY.  New York is a long state to drive through.  It was hot the first day.  I had to stop and fill the antifreeze.  My car was overheating, I had the AC on fairly high. A nice guy named Jerry helped me out.  A drug addict asked me if I had any coke in the gas station.  Couldn't have left any sooner from that small town.

Ate Subway for dinner and called it a night.  Found a cheap hotel.

Next day drove to Cleveland, but not before stopping and eating at Denny's for breakfast.  Roberta was thrilled to eat all food she had not been able to eat while living and teaching in Korea for the past 2 years.  It reminded her of home in South Africa. She had a big bowl of grits(which have a different name in her country) along with pancakes and eggs.

For lunch we ate at Cracker Barrel, just before we reached Cleveland.  We both agreed the flavors of the food were incredible there.  They do an excellent job.  I had chicken fried chicken. She had chicken dumplings.  The sides were mashed potatos, baby carrots, pinto beans, fried apples, and strawberries.  We ate like royalty.

Finally arrived at Rock and Roll hall of fame.  She liked taking photos in front of most of the exhibits.  I got a photo of me in front of Mick Jagger. I was wearing a very "R&R" outfit, donning my skinny jeans and a southern rock tee with my new handmade stone necklace thing from the Jersey craft fair.  Summer of George, bee-yotches....

We confirmed night 2 of the NY-->Chicago road trip in Sandusky, OH.  I grabbed Arby's which completed the trifecta of greatest all-American road restaurants.

Just wanted to note how funny and entertaining and generally kind Roberta was on the drive back.  She kept me continually singing and laughing with comedy bits of the Chris Rock of South Africa, Mr. Noah.  The man is a genius. Some of the funnier bits, which she could recite verbatim, included

-Nelson Mandela's inebriated soliloquy on his out-living Michael Jackson, poking fun at Bill Clinton
-his encounter with a British actor who was so "amazed" at his accent and ethnicity and reminded him not to refer to himself as "colored"(which had a different connotation in South Africa)
-his encounter with an Africaans man who was convinced he was from Capetown and spoke Africaans

She sang countless songs perfectly in the car, including Maria Carey, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, just to name a few

The next day was a fairly short remaining drive to Chicago.  We arrived at around 3 PM at her friend's apt who lives in Edgewater.  She was still working.  We managed to kill time going to the beach.  Having listened to the weather report, we knew the rain had ended for the day.  The beach was cloudy and chilly, but relaxing.  Still waiting for her friend, we sat at the Dominick's on Foster and Sheridan.  Finally, she called and I dropped her with her Chicago friend and thus the mission of delivering precious cargo from NY to Chicago was complete!

Watched Big Brother with the big brother('ekse brara!') and was asleep by 10:30pm CST for the first time in decades.

Spent the weekend on the jersey shore

Just like Billy Joel sang...

Sadly left behind Philly after a fun night of drinking with new friends.  There was a food truck fest the night before and I stayed out at the bars. Note to self, don't drink the night before having to enter New Jersey and having no idea which way you're going or where you're staying.

I ate breakfast at a nice cafe in fish town that sold records. I had the notorious e g g with turkey sausage with some coffee.  Then I went back to Dora's place and researched where the hell I was gonna go on the jersey shore. There are a lot of towns. I found a campsite and through it in my GPS. I took 70 straight through New Jersey.  The campsite wasn't there so I went to a camping store who had a handy directory and the guy put me in the direction of the state park on the shore but no camping was allowed with tents. So I took a closer look and found a place close to LBI.  I reserved a room and went for ride to see some of the damage from hurricane Sandy.  Then I stopped in seaside heights and walked along the magnificent boardwalk and ate a dozen raw clams in the half shell w cocktail sauce. And a deep fried twinkie.  Driving home took a while.  I had to go about 25 miles. Didn't realize it was that far. Paid a toll the old school way by throwing the coins in the basket.  Stopped at a convenience store called Cumberland stop or something like that.  Very cool sign. I felt like I was in another place and time in america. Jersey is a trip.

Some guy helped me set up my tent with the help of his gas lantern which was very bright.  My battery operated lantern was not working even with the brand new D batteries. First time I've made the tent without putting up the rain fly. But no worries there-its gonna be dry as a bone all weekend.

Tried to watch the new wolverine movie that I bit torrented but the sound was too bad.

Through some old food out from last weekend.I can't believe I've been traveling a week. It doesn't feel like it.

Tomorrow is Saturday and time to let loose. I haven't decided whether to kayak, water ski, or try to paddle board.  There is also a 5 k race that could be fun and a clam bake before that. I'm going to rent a room tomorrow right on the shore.

Then it's off to home most likely or possibly New York City. But that's just more traffic to fight. Not sure how much I have left in me.

Talk to you later,

I'm a Fun Guy, wink wink ;)

Today was hilarious. First night I decided to indulge in some alcohol with the exception of one beer last night.  The beginning of the day was not fun.  Sat at the B&B till 1 pm figuring out what to do today.  Talked to the folks at the Folk Festival who said I could not attend just Thursday, had to go on Friday for a one day pass. So I had to figure out a plan b quickly.  Scoured through Philly tourist material and decided on going to thrift stores to buy clothes for the trip.  Was going to go to the Barnes Museum which houses French Impressionist Art and an arboretum but I ran out of time since I was planning on hitting a couch surfing event at 7 pm.

I barely made it out of the house when I stumbled upon a cool little joint selling some interesting sandwiches, all with very creative ingredient combinations, Italian-based.  There was an Albanian guy who spoke Greek working the counter, had a good time chatting with him in Greek for a bit.  He gave me a free sandwich.  I ate a Diavlo, which had chicken, salami, herb cheddar spread, provolone, broccoli rabe, all heated through on a nice french bun.  I didn't get a side of anything.  He gave me another sandwich to go and said it was on the house.

Next I took the train to the thrift shop and bought a plaid button-down vintage shirt, then I bought a sports coat, also vintage.  Then I went to the AIDS thrift store and sifted through clothes there. Finally found a pair of levi's jorts and a t-shirt, changed into that and went for the hipster look.  There was a nights of philly street fest right outside the place, so I was lucky to stumble upon that.  Spent the next several hours just wandering the fest walking, bought a hat to go with my outfit.  Ate the spare sandwich, and bought a frozen orange drink.  I seemed to be drinking a lot of sugary drinks today, I also tried a bottle of birch beer from a convenience store which is a Pennsylvania Dutch drink according to package.  I watched a great folky rock band from PA that covered a Dead song off of Workingman's Dead and had a great-looking lead vocalist. They were young and full of promise and obviously dedicated to their craft.

Finally, the fest closed, and I continued my night at an Irish bar listening to a band and trying to drum up conversation with people.  Not having much success, left and looked for other places to find people to socialize with and finally ran into a place with a friendly couple who joked around with me and bought me 2 drinks. So it ended up a 4 drink night, 2 beers, Jameson on the rocks and an cider beer.

They helpfully instructed me as to when to expect the 47 bus to get me back home.  The bus promptly arrived and I made it back to Dora's safe and sound.  Lots of people-watching today.  Great city, fun times.

Tomorrow, I expect I will go to the folk fest, enjoy some music, then head to NY or possibly a city on the Jersey Shore for some summer relaxation.  Maybe do NY on Saturday.  I think at that point I might call the vacation officially over and head home.  Not much more to see or do.

I hope I can invigorate and inspire myself into having a great rest of the trip.  I was looking for some epic nights to remember, hopefully I can conjure something up and have some great memories and photos.

Will post some photos hopefully tomorrow,

City of brotherly loveliness

This city is beautiful. Of course, Pittsburgh was great in my opinion so this city just blew me out of the water.  Everybody keeps talking about Chicago and how great it is but these cities are fantastic.  Arrived finally at 5pm after sitting in some traffic and getting lost trying to find a gas station in rural Pennsylvania in a town straight out of Kingpin or Groundhog Day.   I ate a bite of pizza at Jake's with a guy sitting across from me who couldn't afford any food so he just ate out of the cheese shaker.  Also, somebody almost hit me on the highway, they pulled in front of me, but we were almost at a stand still, it wasn't a near fatal collision or anything.  I did see another small car accident though.  Beautiful, perfect weather today in this city, the climate is definitely warmer than Chicago.  I downloaded and printed out a self-guided walking tour and saw all the historically important buildings like the ones they used to convene during the months leading into the Revolutionary War, and buildings used when Philadelphia was the Capitol of the US.  Saw the liberty bell.  All these things sound touristy but they were great to finally see in person.

Checked into my room, I found a great deal on airbnb for 35, it's a room on the 3rd floor of an old rowhome in Philly proper. Great deal, and a parking space miraculously opened up as I pulled in.  Parking fairy was on my side.

I went out for the evening around 845. I waited for the bus for almost 30 minutes, then walked to Fado, where the couchsurfing group was a team in trivia night.  I didn't find them, even after asking a bunch of tables.

I landed at a bar and talked to some locals, everybody was great.  I had a fun night overall. Tomorrow is another day, probably going to head to the Folk Music Festival.  I should probably tour more tomorrow morning however.  Right now I will research a bit more then hit the sack.

Sorry, no photos uploaded at this time.  See you tomorrow.

Whitewater rafting in Ohipyle

Today was a blast. Drove to nearby Ohiopyle with a friend I met off couchsurfing dot com.  Had a blast.  The water levels were high making for some 4-level rapids which normally would have been 3. Met some people, got pulled over on the way there going much too fast. Was driving with my new friend.  Here's a photo of the adventure.

Ate at a countryside restaurant near the rapids that had an all you can eat "Smorgasbord".  The place has been open for over 60 years, very traditional.  Amazing how traditional has become non-traditional with the influx of the diversity of Chicago--new restaurants, etc.

Anyway, tonight just recovered a bit and took a walk around the city, played R & R bingo at Tiki Lounge on Carson St.  Bingo was invented in Pittsburgh.  Funny host, had to leave and catch z's and try to plan my day for tomorrow.

I'm driving to Philadelphia, going to see that legendary city where John Adams and all the forefathers laid out the blueprint to the greatest democracy(besides Athens)to ever exist. It's going to be pretty much always sunny there for the next few days, looking forward to good weather and scenic drives and fun touring as I make my way to NYC for the weekend.  Got a f

ew Couchsurfing requests in for tomorrow night.  Worried about wildlife near campgrounds in this hillier area of the country(bears), but I will camp to save money or book a cheaper room on Airbnb if I have to.  CS was a great tool for Pittsburgh so I think I will find somewhere to sleep.  Thinking about the folk music fest for Thursday.  I need to connect with fellow travelers, that is one of my goals.  Always fun to travel with those whose priority is also leisure.

I will leave it at that.  Too much screen time for a vacation, headed out in the am.  See you tomorrow!

Love,
George

ps My friend Mo is on the same side of the boat, two people behind me..

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood of Pittsburgh

This city has a story-book feel to it, like you're on an episode of Mr Roger's who is from here.  When I pulled in after checking out from the last city, I couldn't believe what a quaint, beautiful city it was.  Everything's nestled in with the rivers, with all these little bridges. It's like a miniature city, which is of course what I would say coming from Chicago, but it's true.  You can just stroll around and always have perspective of where you are, since you can just look around and see the river in full view.  What a gorgeous setting to live in.  I was having dreams of an idyllic town on some hills near some water.  I thought it was California but I think it was here.

I went on the double decker bus tour and lost my hat. It was a hot windy day.  Saw Pittsburgh campus, Carnegie-Melon campus among other university campuses, so many great civic buildings, mostly donated by Carnegie, that philanthropic capitalist we love to hate.

The buildings downtown feel closer together than Chicago--the streets are narrower--it all makes for a minituarized version of Chicago, kind of like that model town on Mr Roger's show.

And when you pull into the city from the countryside, it's like going to Imagination Land, just like when the Mr Roger's show goes into full-on trippy-puppet mode.  All of a sudden the city comes in full view, what a sight.

So I had to stay here instead of driving to my next camping destination.  I hit up couchsurfing dot com and Mo has graciously let me stay at his apartment.  He is doing his fellowship at the hospital at University of Pittsburgh and even had a parking space for me.  We got some half price small plates at the Library right on Carson St.  The plan is to go rafting tomorrow nearby in Ohiopyle.  He had posted looking for people to go mid-week and I replied.  Nice place here---he has the air-conditioning set a little high, but I doubled up my blanket and the couch is very comfortable.

Adios, till tomorrow.  Sorry no photos, phone died

Like a Kikos in a candy store

I'm rewriting this from the beginning- my phone died and it didn't save anything.

What a sight to see is Detroit. Saw the steel fist public art sculpture which is Downtown in view of Windsor. Saw Corktown the oldest residential hood. Saw where tiger stadium used to be. Saw michigan central station a huge abandoned building. Saw north cork town described as a rural urban wild land. Saw Cass corridor known for its seediness and grit. Saw brush park or something like that. There were a bunch of run Down mansions.

Saw the Fischer building in what was supposed to become the next city center of Detroit. Saw an old factory from 1916 that is 3 million sq feet and is completely run down.

Then I ate and planned my next city at the golden fleece in Greektown.

I chose the shore of lake Erie. I'm camping in a state park. I arrived around 8, chose a site, set up my tent and settled in for the night by 10pm.  I'm about an hour west of Cleveland. There are some islands you can ferry to and other things to do in this little spot.  I have to decide where I'm going next.

Thats all for now.

The 2013 Kik-America Tour is conceived and begins on the same day!

I haven't been on a road trip since 2009.  So I decided not to delay one more day.  I don't want to watch back to school commercials, I'd rather enjoy the summer before it's over, so there I went,  grabbing my camping gear, packing my car, then out the door.  It happened literally that spontaneously.  I'm long overdue for a vacation. I didn't have the time to try and organize people to come with.  I would've preferred company, but hopefully I will make some acquaintances or even friends along the way.

I made it all the way to Detroit.  Tonight I'm staying at a Red Roof Inn just north of Detroit.  I was planning on stopping in Kalamazoo since I left pretty late from Chicago, but I ended up driving all the way here.  I can't wait to see this decaying, recently bankrupt city and what all the hype is about.  Hopefully I see some abandoned houses, a lot of domestic cars, and maybe a shrine to Kiss or Alice Cooper.  I did see a Ted Nugent Camp for Kids on the GPS, not sure what that is.

On my way, I stopped at Fort Custer National Cemetery.  I did this not on purpose--I was looking for the Fort Custer State Park to pitch a tent and stay for the night.  It was about 12:30 am when I did this.  The GPS led me to the cemetary.  The cemetary has a dramatic entrance---US flags line the path into the cemetary: http://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/ftcuster.asp.    There was also a military camp/armory/etc across the street.  It was cool to see a US military base.  I'm not even sure I've seen one before. There was also an airport.

It turns out the state park doesn't offer much camping, just some cabins.  Oh well, it would've been tricky and too much work to set up a tent after dark.  And who knows, there could be bears in Michigan.  What was I thinking trying to set up camp after midnight anyway?

I drove past Ann Arbor which I'm guessing is where University of Michigan is located based on some signage I saw(I should probably know this growing up in the midwest and attending a big ten university myself).  I think I went there when I was younger on a family vacation--I think there are some museums there.

I turned on the radio as I was nearing Detroit and some Browns fan was touting the team this year, saying they are gonna be AFC North contenders and they will beat Baltimore in week 2.  It's fun listening to local sports shows.  This man was obviously deranged--the Browns are horrible.

I think I picked a good part of the country to begin my Kiko-tour of America.  There are so many large cities--Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and others.  I just have to figure out whether to go north of Lake Erie or head south through Cleveland after seeing/doing a bit more in Detroit.

It's tempting to go to Toronto if I go north, then to Buffalo before heading west back towards Chicago.

Of course at some point I'm going to have to decide whether I want to go all the way east to New York or Boston.  That would be incredible.  I probably wouldn't make it back until the middle-to-end of the week if I did that.

I'm going to try to save money by either camping at state parks some nights, or using airbnb or possibly couchsurfing.com.   I would prefer not to camp actually.  We'll see where this trip takes me.  I think my car should hold up, it's driving perfectly so far.

Going to catch some z's.  Look for my next post tomorrow.  Any suggestions on what to do around Detroit or nearby, I will probably do it considering I have no plan, so here's your chance to send me to all your favorite places!

G'night,

-George
